I live in Brooklyn and plan to attend. Pitchfork got the date wrong, though. It's on October 2nd.

Hello,

I just realized this happened last night -- did anyone see this? If so, I'd love to hear whatever details there are to tell :)

Thanks!

Granted, I was listening to the recording and its not that great of quality( I recorded on my mp3 player).
I'll post it after I split it.

I went to Carrie's reading last night at the New School. I was feeling nervous and weird in revisiting my Sleater-Kinney obsession now that they aren't together any more, but it was Carrie and how could I not go.

I was expecting Carrie to read intros she has written in books and travelogues that have been published in magazines. And she kinda did.

She read an intro she wrote for a book on the Rock n Roll Camp for Girls. Which I thought was a bit stretched out but she wrote and read it very powerfully.

The next piece she read was at first about her neighborhood in Portland, but became so much more. Her neighborhood, Hollywood, is a laid-back area of Southwest Portland. That recently got the Rock n Roll Cafe put there by its owner Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & the Raiders. She also had a slide show going for this.

Now that this point the slideshow switches from historical pictures into a pictures of Paul Jones and the Raiders along with some of their music playing. Carrie was saying how angst she was by this new tourist restaurant by a defunct 60's musician. Then she went to eat there and she loved it. She read about safe comfort food, faded musicians, guitars as museum pieces (along with Carrie's guitar at EMP), and so much more.

Then Greil Marcus asked her a few questions and then Carrie answered several questions from the audience.

I was really impressed by the Rock n Roll Cafe essay and how Carrie was able to transform it into so much more than either just about Hollywood or the Cafe. There were parts of this that was really funny and engaging as she was relaxed and comfortable as she made jokes about herself and read it conversional-like.

I was really proud of her and I think this Rock n Roll essay should be on NPR's This American Life. It had music, quirkiness, and an odd subject. It was a slice of life where 60's icon meets Hollywood (but not that Hollywood).

I was wondering who were the Sleater-Kinney fans in the audience. But I didn’t recognize anyone from any shows. Although it did seem that everyone knew of Carrie's band.

I thought of approaching her after the forum and saying “Hi” but she may have recognized me from some shows and I didn't want her to think I was stalking her or anything.

And here's the recording:

I apologize for the ambient noise and the very crappy quality; I was in the back of the room where the drinks were and you can hear people digging through the ice chest.

wow, thanks for both the recording and the recount.

being thousands of miles away, it's nice to have a little bit of that day here.

Yeah! thanks very much for those.
I haven't listened to all of it yet but it sounds interesting so far.
